Wildcats return to Abilene for conference play

March 5, 2015 by Savanah Silva

The ACU softball team begins conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana.

The Wildcats, who are 3-13, will take on the 4-12 Lions in a single game Friday and a double-header Saturday.

ACU returned from Jackson, Florida, last weekend where they competed in the Dolphin Invitational. Offensively the team played well, but defensively they came up short. The team lost all five games over the three-day tournament.

Peyton Hedrick, freshman infielder from Forney, led the Wildcats offensively with her two RBI, two extra-base hits and hitting average of .556 throughout the invitational.

Emily Seidel, senior pitcher from Burbank, California, appeared in all five games with four starts and 14 strikeouts throughout the tournament. Relief pitcher, Julia Montoya, junior from Manchaca, also threw seven innings.

Southeastern Louisiana will enter the weekend’s tournament at 4-12. The Lions are coming off of a win against the Detroit Titans, 9-1. They too have been dealing with weather issues, having their last tournament canceled due to snow.

Lion’s catcher Lacy Fritz had a good game against the Titans with a homerun and drove in six runs. Fritz has started 13 games this seasons.

Another key player on the Lions’ roster is pitcher Taylor Bishop. Bishop threw five innings in the game against Detroit.

“We know how to play the game, we just need to find a way to put it all together,” said Tori Valdivia, sophomore infielder from Trabuco Canyon, California.

Friday’s match is set to start 30 minutes later due to winter weather expected. First pitch will be thrown at 6:30 p.m. at Poly Wells field. Games two and three are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
