Wildcats head to Austin and San Marcos

March 26, 2015 by Hannah Null

The Wildcats will head to San Marcos and Austin this weekend to compete in their second outdoor meet this season.

The team members that qualified will attend the Texas Relays meet in Austin while those that didn’t will compete in the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State.

This will be the 88th Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium where the ‘Cats have been competing for over five years.

Five women will compete in the Texas Relays meet. Distance runners Diana Garcia Muñoz, Alexandria Hackett, Petrene Plummer and Victoria Isabella Gutierrez will be in competition while hurdler Lexus Williams will also be in the open.

All runners will compete in the distance medley relay, and Muñoz will also compete in the 1,500-meter race while Gutierrez will take on the 800-meter run.

Daniel Block, Rosen Daniel, Jaden Dement, Deandre McBride, Jeremy Tatham, Devan Brown, Osie Alleyne-Forte and Johnathan Farquharson will represent the men’s team at the Texas Relays.

Freshman distance runner Ryan Cleary will compete with the remaining teammates at the Bobcat Invitational.

“I’m expecting big performances and high finishes as we continue to open up the outdoor season,” Cleary said. “I think there are going to be a few surprise performances as well.”

Both meets will consist of strong competition and will help the ‘Cats improve before the April meets.

Assistant coach Ray Walker, has high expectations for his team at both meets.

“We expect a big performance from the girls at Texas State,” Walker said. “Even though it is a low profile meet, it has really good competition.”

This meet will be a good practice run for meets the Wildcats will compete in later in the season.

Runners such as Cleary believe the previous meet has prepared them for the strong competition they will face this weekend.

“Right now, our focus is getting through March and running some of our best times in April and May,” Walker said. “But our expectations are not low because we are really strong in a lot of areas right now.”

Both meets begin Wednesday, but the Wildcats will start the meets Thursday afternoon.

There is no question that the current climate among Americans is tense and, as the Capitol Hill and 2020 riots show, even hostile. Although these behaviors have always been present, it seems that the last decade has seen an increase in tribal tendencies. We cling to the ankles of our political candi...
