ACU tennis brings home success from Ojai Valley Tournament

April 28, 2015 by Hannah Little

The women’s tennis team competed in the 115th-annual Ojai Valley Tournament last weekend as two teammates made it all the way to the championship in singles.

Senior Brittney Reed and sophomore Erin Walker competed against each other in the final championship match of the tournament. Walker defeated Reed in close sets of 6-1 and 7-5 to take the championship.

Walker entered the tournament as the sixth seed, and worked her way up through competition. She defeated the 11th, fourth, and second seeded opponents before reaching the finals against Reed. Including the finals victory, Walker finished the season with an overall record in singles of 18-6.

Reed also won four-straight matches before reaching the finals match, including a sweep in the semifinals over the defending singles champion, Lauren Stratman from Westmont College.

Wildcat’s doubles also made it to the championship with Walker and freshman Pothier taking on Reed and junior Kaysie Hermsdorf.

The winning duo defeated Hermsdorf and Reed 7-6 and 6-1. Walker and Pothier put together a great doubles performance as the two had only played alongside one another four times earlier in the spring.

Hermsdorf and Reed have played with one another all season but one date. The two recently earned First Team All-Southland Conference honors after marking a 17-2 record.

The third honor given to ACU was the Ojai’s Women’s Independent College Team Trophy. The five Wildcats won 21 of 26 singles and doubles matches for the winning percentage of .808

The men’s team showed up to compete by winning two of its three quarterfinal matches. However, the Wildcats could not progress out of the singles and doubles semifinals.

Senior Guilherme Gesser defeated teammate junior Marco Bensley in no. 2 singles in a close match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Sixth-seeded sophomore Nico Agritelley upset the no. 1 player, Felix Schueller 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, but lost to third seeded, Brendan Aguilar in the semifinals.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
