FAC to write letters to retirement homes in Abilene

November 9, 2015 by Mariana Cedillo

Freshman Action Council is holding a service project called Crown of Glory, where students can write letters to residents in retirement homes.

Abby Weaver, junior Biblical studies major from Lufkin, and Megan Gregory, sophomore speech pathology major from Hurst, are two of the three FAC co-chairs and said their goal this year is to send 400 letters.

FAC, under Caddie Coupe, has put out different service projects for several years now.

“The last three years, we felt like writing notes of encouragement or thank you notes to different groups,” said Coupe, director of New Student Programs. “It’s a good service project for freshman to be a part of.”

“In the fall semester, we always start out with an easier service project, one that is campus wide,” said Weaver.

The first year, FAC wrote thank you notes to staff members on campus.

“Our very first year we wrote thank you cards to our unsung heroes of campus,” Coupe said.

Those heroes included Bean workers, landscaping crew and the police department.

“We wrote thank you notes to those group on campus because they work so hard and don’t really get the recognition,” Weaver said.

Last year service project was called Red, White, and Thank You and happened around Veteran’s Day. Students wrote letters to active military members and veterans.

“We really like the idea of writing letters, so we are continuing that,” Weaver said. “It’s simple, but it makes a big difference to the people who receive the letters.”

This year service project was inspired by Proverbs 16:31, which talks about grey hairs being a crown of glory. All students are encouraged to participate.

Crown of Glory will start on Nov. 9 through Nov. 13 in the Campus Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where members will have a table set up.

“Some of the students in FAC will be working the table and inviting others to write a quick encouragement letter to the elderly,” Gregory said. “They don’t have to sign up for anything, just write a note to someone who would really enjoy it.”

The homes they will be delivering the letters to are:

  • Royal Estates
  • University Place
  • Care Inn of Abilene
  • Northern Oaks Living and Rehabilitation
  • Covenant Place
