Upper level and graduate students interested in Medieval Literature will have an opportunity to travel abroad to Oxford this summer with the Department of Language and Literature.
The three-week course covers Geoffrey Chaucer’s work, and students will travel the road to Canterbury, starting in London and making several stops along the way.
This is the fourth year for the department to take a summer study abroad trip and the second year Dr. Mikey Deloney, associate professor of language and literature, will be teaching a class. Deloney will be reprising the class she taught in 2014, adding other texts and corresponding excursions to the curriculum, such as the medieval city of York.
“We attended two Shakespeare plays, one in Oxford and one in the Globe,” Deloney said. “We also visited the Tower of London, the British Museum and the British Library, among other sites. The students also have free time for excursions each weekend. I suspect that the Harry Potter center in North London will be on our agenda this summer.”
Students do not need to be English majors to join the program, and they can earn undergraduate and graduate credit for the course. A student’s suitability for a study abroad program will be evaluated upon application. Students must be in good standing with the university and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. They must also have at least 60 hours of credit at the time of departure.
The cost of the program is $3,200 and includes housing in Oxford, field trips and enrichment activities and basic insurance. Round-trip airfare and other transportation expenses are not included in the program fee.
“Important literature really comes alive when discussed on the historical site,” Deloney said. “I love spending 24/7 time with a group of motivated and engaged students. And I love it when students realize that people lived these stories and walked the ground, climbed the castle steps and perhaps defended the castle as well.”
