Track gears up for Texas Tech Open

March 23, 2016 by Savanah Silva

Easter weekend will be full of jumps, sprints and runs for the Wildcat track and field teams as they travel to the land of Red Raiders to compete in the Texas Tech Outdoor Open.

This will only be the second meet in the outdoor season for the ‘Cats. They competed during Spring Break in Fort Worth at the TCU Invitational where they had over eight personal bests and claimed three gold medals.

Allie Hackett won her 11th race since the start of last outdoor season when she claimed gold in the 1,500 meter run. Kimone Green led from start to finish in the 400m, which gave her the top spot on the podium.

Rounding out the three Wildcats who won their respective events was thrower Kai Schmidt who took first in the men’s discus throw.

In previous years, the Texas Tech Open has seen a wide range of talent with each event having its own top athletes. This year is expected to be no different with ACU’s biggest competition being Tech themselves. Junior Colleges and other smaller schools will also be competing.

“The goal for outdoors is to continue the process of being in the best shape of their lives,” assistant track coach, Ray Walker said “There are a lot of individual goals, but our main focus is to enjoy what God is doing in our lives.”

After this weekend, ACU will compete every weekend until conference in May. The women’s team is coming off of a runner-up finish at the Southland Conference Indoor championship where just two years ago they finished ninth overall.

ACU will look to gain off of that success as they continue their transition into this season of outdoor. In the coming weeks, the Wildcats will be competing at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin, one more meet in Lubbock and then two home meets at the new Elmer Grey Stadium.

Field events begin at 11 a.m. March 24, with the men and women’s javelin. Running events will kick off at 3 p.m. with the women’s 3k-steeple run.
