Golf competes in Southland Conference Championship

April 18, 2016 by Mary Kate Rotenberry

The ACU golf team will be competing in the Southland Conference Championship this week at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney.

The team is coming off one of their worst performances this season, but head coach Tom Shaw is not worried.

“They have already put it behind them,” Shaw said. “Attitude wise we will be ready to go. We can’t just be about results. We are trying to do the little things and the results will come.”

Shaw said every tournament is a learning experience for his team.

“I think we have proven every week that we are a better team than last year,” Shaw said. “Every week I think is a learning experience whether you are a great team or not. I think you need to learn in order to grow, and we are doing that every week.”

The Wildcats look to compete well this week in McKinney, and having prior experiences on the course may be the key to a stand out performance for the team.

“We feel like it is just down the road and a lot of guys have played it before,” Shaw said. “I think if we play well we will be in the top four or five. We are going to take care of our own business.”

Senior Dillon Vaughn said he is really excited to play and represent ACU for the last time in his collegiate career.

“This is my last college golf tournament, so I want to make the best of it and play as well as possible,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn said he played at Stonebridge last year and the course will be a big test for his game.

“It’s a very tough course that will test every aspect of my game, and the person who is most sharp will win this week,” Vaughn said.

The Wildcats will not only face tough conference competition, but also rough weather conditions.

Vaughn is not worried about the weather this week, but looks to use it to his advantage.

“I think my greatest strength this week with the rain in the forecast is my ability to grind and not let the weather effect my mental game,” Vaughn said. “I think this will help me to have an edge on some of the other players.”

The team will tee off Monday morning for round one. The tournament concludes on Wednesday.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
