Wildcat tennis earns victory in final conference match up

April 18, 2016 by Max Preston

Both the men and women’s tennis team had to make up their postponed matchups against New Orleans in Houston this weekend, and both were successful as the men won 6-1 and the women won 5-2. The men also played Texas A&M on Friday and lost 5-1.

The men are now 19-9 overall (.679 pct) and 3-2 in conference play. The women made it to an impressive 20 wins with a 20-6 overall record (.769 pct) and a 9-2 conference record.

In men’s singles, the team got one victory out of five matches played against A&M and five wins out of six against New Orleans. Hunter Holman was a standout for the Wildcats as the only one to win both of his singles matches and getting the only point they scored against A&M. Holman won his match against A&M by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) and his match against New Orleans 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, the men won one out of the three matches played against A&M, but ended up sweeping New Orleans two matches to none the next day. The teams for each match included Nico Agritelley/Henry Adams, Jason Proctor/Paul Domanski, and for the A&M match Josh Sheehy played with Holman, but against New Orleans Sheehy played with Sebastian Langdon.

Agritelley and Adams won their match against A&M 6-2 and came out with no result against New Orleans, Domanski and Proctor lost their match against A&M 7-5 and won their match against New Orleans 6-0, Sheehy and Holman lost to A&M 6-1 and against New Orleans, Sheehy and Langdon won 6-1

“It felt great to close out the conference with a win and a pretty convincing win too,” Langdon said. “We all battled hard to win after playing A&M.”

In women’s singles, they earned four victories out of six. Lucile Pothier won her match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), Nada Marjanovic won 6-2, 6-1, Whitney Williams won 6-4, 6-3, and Jordan Henry beat her competition 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, the women won two matches out of two played. The teams against New Orleans included Erin Walker/Williams, Pothier/Kaysie Hermsdorf, and Marjanovic/Andrea Crook. Walker and Williams won their match 6-3, Pothier and Hermsdorf won 6-1, and Marjanovic and Crook’s match went unfinished.

“This was a great year in conference for us because we established that we deserve to be a Division 1 school and have shown that by placing third in our conference,” Sheehy said. “Those of us going to California are pumped for the amazing atmosphere out there and a great way to end the season.”

The next matches for the men and women will be in the Ojai Tournament in Ojai, California. The matches will begin Thursday, April 21 and go through Sunday, April 24.
