Wildcat tennis travels to California to finish season

April 20, 2016 by Max Preston

The men and women’s tennis team are set to play their final matches of the year in Ojai, California. Both teams will most likely see opponents from the Pac-12 along with other Div. I conferences. The Wildcats will see some prestigious competition to close out the season.

The men are coming off a weekend where they lost to Texas A&M 5-1 and won their final conference match against New Orleans 6-1. The men finished third in the Southland Conference this year and will have plenty of confidence heading into this weekend.

They will head into the Ojai tournament with a 19-9 overall record and a 9-0 neutral record.

“We expect the field to be competitive in Ojai but we feel confident that we can make a presence and perform well individually,” sophomore Henry Adams said. “We have had a successful season and played a lot of tough matches so I expect that to pay off in this tournament.”

The women are coming off of a win in their final conference match as well, beating New Orleans 5-2. The women finished at an impressive second place in the Southland conference and will be excited to close out the year in a competitive tournament. They will head into this weekend with a 20-6 (.769 pct) record along with a 4-0 neutral record.

“We are really looking forward to our last matches of the season,” senior Nada Marjanovic said. “We know there’s going to be great competition and we are ready to get out there and compete. We have had a great season and have put in a lot of hard work and hopefully the results will come again like they did last year.”

Several members of the women’s team were honored with end of season awards. Sophomores Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams were selected to the First-Team All-Southland Conference squad. Senior Kaysie Hermsdorf and Pothier earned First-Team All-Southland Conference honors for doubles, while junior Erin Walker and Williams were voted to the honorable mention doubles team.

The Ojai tournament will begin play Thursday at 8 A.M. and will go until Sunday.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
