Wildcats drop three at home to Lumberjacks

May 4, 2016 by Daniel Zepeda

The Wildcats extended their losing streak to seven games after suffering a three-game sweep at home to Stephen F. Austin last weekend. ACU gave up double-digit runs in games one and two while dropping to 5-16 in conference and 13-28 for the season.

The Wildcats trailed 3-1 after seven innings in game one looking for a comeback to start off the series. Those ambitions quickly hit a road block as the Lumberjacks scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to break the game open. After already scoring five runs on walks and sacrifice flies, SFA blasted a three-run home run to make it 11-1.

ACU added another run in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-single to left field by senior catcher Alex Copeland to make the final 11-2. Copeland finished 3-for-4 and senior designated hitter Heath Beasley went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Senior Garrett deMeyere dropped to 2-7 on the year after pitching 6.0 innings and giving up three earned runs while striking out five Lumberjacks.

Game two was the same song, just a different note, for the Wildcats. The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run bomb to right field. The Wildcats scored a run in the fifth and then two more in the seventh. Junior third baseman Russell Crippen drove in two with a double to right-center field for his lone hit of the game. Crippen leads ACU with a .326 batting average, along with extra base hits (15), home runs (3) and runs batted in (17).

Senior Aaron Mason gave up nine hits and five earned runs in just 4.0 innings of work. The 13-4 loss puts Mason at 5-4 for the season with a 3.15 ERA to lead ACU.

SFA completed the sweep with a 7-2 win over ACU in game three. The Wildcats trailed 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. The Lumberjacks tacked on three runs with a bases loaded double to make the final score 7-2.

The Wildcats will look to bounce back in a three-game series against New Orleans, followed by a game with Texas Tech to complete ACU’s seven-game home stand.
