The Wildcats had a rough opening to their season at the University of New Mexico Tournament. However, despite going 0-4 over the weekend, the team was able to take away some positive things moving forward.
In the first match of the tournament, the Wildcats faced off against the Lobos from New Mexico. The ladies lost in three straight sets (15-25, 19-25, 13-25). The Lobos were able to overpower the Wildcats all game long and the statistics showed it with the Lobos having a comfortable advantage in everything except for blocks, which ACU won 8-6.
The second game against the Idaho Vandals, ACU fared slightly better as they were able to take a set. But that was about it as they lost 3-1 (12-25, 19-25, 25-23, 14-25). Even though the Wildcats only won one set, the stats were much closer, however, a minus-15 error margin proved to be costly in the end.
Saturday ACU began against the Fairfield Stags. The Wildcats were unable to take a set 2015 NCAA tournament qualifiers, as they lost in three straight (25-19, 25-19, 25-22). The Wildcats were able to own the stat sheet in aces and had twice as many blocks as the Stags, but were unable to do much else the entire game.
The last game of the tournament was against the Sun Devils from Arizona State. ACU was able to keep the scores respectable, but still fell in three straight sets (21-25, 21-25, 18-25). The Wildcats again posted more aces and blocks, but ASU almost doubled their hitting percentage at .217 to .121.
The tournament ended with Idaho as the champions, New Mexico in second place, Arizona State in third place, Fairfield in fourth place, and Abilene Christian in fifth place.
The Volleyball team begins their next set of tests when they head to Nebraska on Friday to participate in the tournament hosted by the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
