The Wildcats wrap up a three-game homestand against ORU, before heading to Denton to face UNT.

Soccer hits the road for first time this season

August 26, 2016 by Max Preston

This weekend will be busy for the Wildcat soccer team as it host Oral Roberts university at Elmer Gray stadium, then travel to Denton to take on North Texas.

The women enter this weekend with a 0-1-1 record with the loss coming against UTSA 4-1, and the tie coming in a scoreless match against UTEP. The lone goal of the season so far came from freshman Shay Johnson along with an assist from junior Chloe Fifer. ACU has made 8 saves so far this season with 6 of them coming from senior Sydney Newton. The Wildcats believe this weekend could help jump start their season.

“We’re excited to play and we’ve been working hard so we can come out of this weekend with two good results.” Said sophomore Sophie Standifer.

The ORU women come into their match against the Wildcats with a 1-1-0 record. ORU’s win came against Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 and their loss came against North Texas by a score of 1-0. Caitlyn Hanslovan has scored 2 of the 3 goals this year for the Golden Eagles. Goalkeeper Ryliegh Bohnenstiehl has stopped 5 of 6 shots giving her a .833 save percentage coming into the match.

“I’m excited to see our team play together,” said senior Danielle Otto. “Every game we’ve gotten better, we have worked toward what the coaches have taught us and I’m ready to see the outcome of our hard work.”

The North Texas women boast a perfect 2-0-0 record. Their wins came against Incarnate Word 4-0 and ORU 1-0. ACU hosted UNT in the first game ever played at the new Elmer Gray stadium. The Wildcats will be looking to set the record straight as they fell in that constest, 3-0.

“We need to stay composed and play our game,” said Otto. “We can’t let the other teams affect us, we need to make them adjust to our game.”

UNT is also on the verge of breaking into the North Soccer Coaches Association of America national top 25, as they received votes after a perfect first week. The Mean Green will be the Wildcats first road test of the season.
