Volleyball hosts familiar Mavericks in home opener

September 6, 2016 by Derek Marcelain

The Wildcats open their home schedule Tuesday as they take on the Mavericks from UT-Arlington. The Mavs will bring a 3-4 overall record to Moody after having just finished the Ole Miss Invitational with a 1-2 record.

The Wildcats, still in search of their first win, will be hard-pressed against the Mavericks have posted a 9-2 record against the Southland Conference opponents since leaving in 2012.

The women will not only be looking to get their first win of the season, but also their first win against UT Arlington, as the Mavericks have not lost to ACU in the nine total matchups between the two.

UTA could also be a good measure to see how ACU might do in conference play, as the Mavs have played against Sam Houston St. and McNeese St., winning them both 3-2 and 3-1 respectively. Sam Houston St. and McNeese St. each were ranked similar to ACU in the preseason polls with SHSU a spot ahead in both polls and McNeese flipping with ACU depending on the poll.

The Wildcats will be led by sophomore outside hitter Jacey Smith, who has been stellar for the Wildcats this season as she leads the team in scoring with 88.0 points.  She even received an honorable mention for the Southland Conference offensive player of the week award for her performance at the Omaha Classic.

The Mavericks will bring their own impressive outside hitter in senior Kaitlyn Granger, who has reached double figures in kills five times this year. Granger was named to the all-tournament team at the Ole Miss Invitational last weekend after averaging 2.67 kills per set in the teams three matches.

The Wildcats will look to tweak a few areas of their game and see where they stand against a good comparison team like the Mavs as they prepare to begin conference play Sept. 22.
