DET club to produce Degrassi-inspired miniseries

September 24, 2016 by Derek Marcelain

The Digital Entertainment Technology club, or DET, are in the works of making a mini-series that will be written and produced by students within the club. For those of you who don’t know what DET club is, it is group made up of two parts: one cinematic and one game design group. The cinematography group is the team in charge of this project.

Kassandra Kim, who is in charge of producing the mini-series, says that the group wanted to do something this year that they all could work on during the semester. She said that they had decide that a mini-series that could be posted on YouTube was the best option for them. They eventually worked into a web series that is based off of college students and their lives. Kim said that it “kind of draw inspiration from shows like Degrassi, but it’s not really Degrassi. But it basically focuses on college students so that students here can relate to it.”

The club has been hard at work since the beginning of school, trying to get this put together as soon as possible. Kim said, “We hit the ground running with it. The writers currently are hashing out basically what’s gonna happen over the season and figuring out details for the first episode right now. Once the details of that are figured out, they will write a script. The script will go to me, because I am the producer, and also to the actors, and we will get the parts casted and start filming as soon as possible. I am expecting it to be within the month that we start filming, but that all depends on the writers.”

Kim said she hopes that the students on campus will be open to watching something that was produced by other students and in return will encourage the club to continue making the series. She says the best way for people to let them know that they enjoyed it and want them to continue making the YouTube videos is just to respond to the video, whether that is liking the video or commenting about your favorite part of the video. She also says to subscribe to the channel so that they know how it is reaching people.

“The DET club is basically just for people who are interested in working with video games, film, animation, or anything like that,” Kim said. “And DET club is open to anyone, so even if you’re not a major or minor, you can still come to club. If you dabble in film or want to learn more about video game design, we welcome anybody for that.”

The club meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in COBA 301. Information about the DET club is on Twitter @DET_ACU and Facebook: ACU DET Club.
