Smith, Chapa earn all-Tournament recognition ahead of Southland opener

September 20, 2016 by Derek Marcelain

Volleyball finished regular season tournament play this weekend in Boca Raton, Fla. The Wildcats were unable to come away with a win in the tournament and fell to 1-14 overall.

ACU began the tournament against Florida Atlantic, losing the first two sets 25-11 and 26-24 and stealing the third 25-20, before dropping the fourth set and the match 25-14.

The Wildcats got an opportunity for some revenge in their second game, as they faced off against UT Rio Grande Valley for the second time in as many weeks. ACU got off to a hot start as it took the first two sets 25-23 and 27-25, but was unable to finish as UTRGV swept the next three sets 25-23, 25-21 and 15-3 to complete the comeback (23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-21, 15-3).

The third match of the tournament was against Tulane University. This would be the only game this weekend that the Wildcats would be unable to  win a set as the Green Wave swept them 3-0 with scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-15.

In the final match of the weekend, the Wildcats took on the Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast. The Wildcats would get off to a slow start in this one as they dropped the first two sets 25-14 and 25-17, but were able to bounce back to win the third set 25-20 before some crucial errors let the fourth set slip away to the Eagles 25-16.

Florida Gulf Coast eventually won the tournament as they managed to sweep the competition, winning all four games during the weekend. UTRGV and Tulane both went 2-1 over the weekend, followed by FAU who went 1-3 and ACU who went 0-4.

Sophomore outside hitter Jacey Smith and freshman libero Amanda Chapa were voted to the Owls Classic all-Tournament team for their performances over the weekend. Smith totaled 41 kills over the tournament and Chapa recorded 59 digs.

The Wildcats will continue on the road as they open Southland Conference play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday and visit Incarnate Word on Saturday.

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
