Volleyball splits opening weekend of conference play

September 26, 2016 by Derek Marcelain

Volleyball opened conference play this weekend against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word. The Wildcats split the two games as they lost in straight sets Thursday against TAMU-CC but defeated Incarnate Word 3-2 Saturday.

The Wildcats fought through extra points in the first two sets against the Islanders but were unable to win either of them as they lost 31-29 and 28-26 respectively. The third set was a little different story as the Islanders were able to take it without much difficulty by the score of 25-17.

Kendall Bosse led the Cats with eight kills on the night followed by Lexi Mercier with six and Lauren Walker with five. Jacey Smith and Bosse led the team with two aces apiece and Mercier led the team with eight blocks. Bosse and Makenzie Kesler each had 14 assists and Amanda Chapa totaled 14 digs to lead the Wildcats on the night. The Wildcats as a team hit just .079 on the night.

The Wildcats next match was one of runs, as the Cardinals and Cats would trade sets. ACU started off strong and won the first set 25-21, before the Cardinals quickly took the second set 25-19. ACU would go up 2-1 by winning the third set 25-22, but Incarnate Word would not be out done as they won the fourth set 25-15 to tie the game at two sets apiece. But the Wildcats would not be denied as they routed the Cardinals 15-9 in the fifth set to win the game.

Smith led the team with 14 kills in the game, she also led the team in aces with five. Mercier denied the Cards seven times to lead the team in blocks. Kesler had 15 assists, closely followed by Bosse who had 14 on the night. Chapa had 15 digs for the game and the Wildcats hit a .162 on the night.

With the series split, the Wildcats are 1-1 in conference play and 2-15 overall on the season. They return home to host New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana Thursday and Friday.
