Crnic, Lewis to lead offensive attack against Charleston

November 20, 2016 by Max Preston

The Men’s basketball team will be hosting Charleston Southern University in Moody Coliseum Tuesday.

The Wildcats are 2-0 heading into the game after defeating Schreiner University and the University of New Hampshire in their first two games.

Charleston Southern has a 1-2 record after dropping two games to Florida State and South Carolina Upstate. Its one win came against Columbia International.

“We’re confident like we have been but are taking it with a grain of salt because we know they’re not going to underestimate us and every Div. 1 team is good,” said sophomore forward Hayden Howell. “We can’t afford to get complacent or lax at all or our two wins don’t mean anything.”

Senior guard Jovan Crnic and sophomore forward Jaren Lewis lead the team in scoring as Crnic has averaged 16 points a game and Lewis has averaged 12.5

Crnic has also earned the most assists on the team with six, while sophomore center Jalone Friday has grabbed the most rebounds with 14 total.

“We’re just going to start working on the specifics with Charleston Southern and keep working on taking care of the ball and not fouling as a team.” said Howell

For Charleston Southern, freshman guard Christian Keeling has averaged the most points per game on the team with 16.7

Junior forward Javis Howard has averaged the most rebounds over the three games with 9, while junior guard Cortez Mitchell has averaged the most assists with 3.

The Bucs struggled a season ago, finishing with just nine wins, but they posted a 19-win season during the 2014-15 campaign. Meanwhile, the Wildcats are starting 2-0 for the second consecutive season, but just the second time since the 2009-10 season when they defeated Baptist Bible and Dallas Christian.

Last season when ACU began its season 2-0 it then lost two straight to Portland and Colorado State. If the Wildcats want to avoid that they will have to earn a win Tuesday or on Friday when they take on Oklahoma.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 P.M. and will air on the radio on 98.1 FM.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
