Tennis continues spring non-conference after 3-1 record last weekend

January 26, 2017 by Trevor Wyatt

The Wildcats travel to Dayton, Ohio on Friday for a 10 a.m. matchup against Wright State and a 5:30 matchup against the University of Dayton. ACU continues the weekend  playing against Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky Saturday Morning, and finishes off in Cincinnati, Ohio against Northern Kentucky University at 7 p.m.

Men’s Tennis had a slow start against their first three opponents, but had overwhelming victories against Colorado State(7-0,) Metropolitan State-Denver(6-1,) and University of Northern Colorado(6-1,) before defeating Air Force in a tightly contented matchup 4-3. Wright State is 0-3 on the season, University of Dayton is 1-2, Eastern Kentucky is 0-2, and Northern Kentucky lost their only matchup yet this season.

The men’s team is picking up momentum in its most recent win streak, with sweeps in multiple games against Air Force, Colorado State and Metropolitan State-Denver. Earning an award last week was 2016 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, as junior Hunter Holman, who went 4-0 in his number 3 doubles spots and 3-0 in his singles matches, with his final singles victory clinching the win against Air Force.

The women’s tennis team plays four teams this weekend, traveling to Houston to play Prairie View A&M and U of H, before traveling to Dallas to play SMU and a team to be announced later. ACU is 1-1 with a loss against TCU and a win against UTEP. PVAM is 0-5 on the season, U of H is 1-1, and although SMU has not played a true game, its double’s teams swept the Metroplex Mania tournament Jan. 16.

Senior Erin Walker helped spark a fire in the rest of the team with her own comeback victory, which led to the team’s come-from-behind victory against UTEP.
