About 50 ACU students celebrated Earth day by attending Abilene State Park on April 22nd. The ACU Outdoors Club sponsored the event, handing out 75 tickets for free admission to the park during the prior week.
The ACU Outdoors Club is a relatively new group, and hopes to be formally recognized as a student organization next semester. It began as a small group of likeminded students who enjoyed hiking and exploring, but has since grown to include an email list with over 25 students. They hope to be able to receive funding next year in order to encourage student engagement with state parks and hiking trails across West Texas.
” I mean, who doesn’t like being outdoors?”said Joe Cuthbert, Junior Finance major from San Antonio. “It’s the easiest club to be apart of.”
The Outdoors Club provided water and food, as students hiked through the park and played volleyball.
The tickets were provided by Ryan Hunter, the superintendent of Abilene State Park. Hunter is also the husband of Dr. Rebecca Hunter, an associate professor of biology at Abilene Christian University.
