Sparrows hope to start diverse social club

October 4, 2017 by Cynthia Rangel

The Sparrows are a new student organization on campus with the hopes of becoming a social club.

Jordan Milton, sophomore elementary education major from Fort Worth, said she wanted to start a group targeted at minority women to come together in community.

New group on campus, The Sparrows, hope to become social club.

“Everyone is welcome,” Milton said. “It’s just a place where minorities are able to come and be themselves and have the opportunity to be in a social club.”

For the group to become a social club, they must be a student organization for an entire year.

There are groups available on campus for minority groups such as Black Student Association and Hispanos Unidos, but Milton said she wanted to “be more comfortable in the social club aspect.”

“I know that when I was going through the rushing in the spring last semester, I didn’t really feel at home, and I really wanted to find a place that felt more comfortable and I wanted that to be for everyone,” Milton said.

Milton is serving as the organization’s president, and wants to create an atmosphere where students are able to be themselves.

“You can come any type of race and bring what your culture is to the table so we are able to show and educate the community about what it is,” Milton said. “Come as you are, we will accept you no matter who you are, and we are also here for people to become more comfortable with themselves and have a community of sisters.”
