Guest Column: Sawyer’s flu-fighting tips

February 2, 2018 by Special Contributor

The infamous flu… It’s here and infecting everyone around us. What if we feed and treat our bodies in a way that can help us kick our immune system into high gear and beat this thing? Here is a list of my tips to fight off this flu:

HYDRATE: Drink a glass of water when you first wake up. Fill yourself a reusable bottle/cup and sip on it the rest of the day. Don’t forget your other liquids too! Grab your coffee and hot tea, and sip on those as well!

SLEEP: I know that college has this weird stereotype in which college students are supposed to stay up all night and make it with 4-5 hours of sleep, but that just isn’t sustainable. Not sleeping enough will weaken your immune system and make you even more of a candidate for the flu. It’s Sing Song season, and I know many of us have practice until almost midnight. So that means that a reasonable bedtime of 10-11 just isn’t happening right now. Try taking an afternoon nap if that is attainable for you, and, if not, just make the mindful decision to put your electronics away after practice and get good quality sleep for the short amount of time that you can.

FRUITS & VEGGIES: Bring on the vitamins and minerals to help boost your immune system. Add in spinach to your smoothies, eat extra fruit (especially oranges, so much vitamin C) and be conscious about making sure you get a good amount of fruits and vegetables in most of your meals each day!

EAT: One way you can strengthen our immune systems is by making sure you feed yourself enough food and eat every 3-4 hours. Think about it: if we skip breakfast, eat a bar for lunch, and then eat dinner, we aren’t feeding our bodies near enough food, and our bodies are weak and starving with no energy (food) to burn. If we eat a snack/meal every 3-4 hours, we are giving our body consistent energy that is used to keep our body burning energy and using it to fight off infection!

Prayers that this flu epidemic ends quick, and no one else is affected!

XOXO Sawyer
