Women clinch first ever spot in Southland tournament, finish with UIW

March 2, 2018 by Max Preston

Despite taking a disappointing 78-52 loss to Stephen F. Austin in its regular season home finale, the women’s basketball team still made history by clinching its first Southland tournament spot.

Shortly after losing to SFA, New Orleans defeated Southeastern Louisiana 74-71 to solidify the Wildcats trip to Katy. The women currently sit at the seventh seed in the conference tournament, but could see changes depending on its performance in its final game, as well as the results of Nicholls and Texas A&M’ Corpus Christi’s games.

The Wildcats will face Incarnate Word on the road for its final game of the season. Although the Cardinals are struggling this season, currently ranking 11th in the Southland Conference, the team still gave ACU a run for its money when last facing each other this season.

Junior Sara Willamson stepped up to the plate though, as she came through with two clutch layups in the final seconds of the game to beat UIW 58-56. The women have not lost to the Cardinals since the 2012-2013 season when being defeated 68-53 on the road.

Going into the game, sophomore guard Breanna Wright looks to continue leading the Wildcats as she ranks first on her team and seventh in the Southland Conference in scoring averaging 13.7 points per game.

Senior forward Sierra Allen and senior center Taudenciah Oluoch will be playing their last ever regular season game against UIW, as they celebrated senior night against SFA Wednesday.

The women’s final regular season game is scheduled to begin in San Antonio Saturday at 1 p.m. Coverage of the game can be heard on 98.1 FM.
