Soccer falls 1-0 against Texas Tech

August 27, 2018 by Rachel Poe

ACU traveled to Lubbock Sunday evening for a match against Big 12 competitor Texas Tech and lost 1-0.

The wind was blowing at 17 mph in Lubbock during the game and the Wildcats used it in its favor, shutting out the Red Raiders in the first half. Tech took advantage of the rapid winds in the second-half, however, when senior midfielder Jordan Duke scored the one and only goal of the night in the 55th minute.

Texas Tech managed to take 19 shots in the game, while ACU only took one coming from junior midfielder/defender Shay Johnson in the 22nd minute.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Rachel Johnson had another impressive game saving seven of eight shots on goal.

Johnson now has a total of 14 saves in her first three games. The goal allowed in the second-half was only her first of the season.

She said having a successful first three games is amazing, but she is happy to have the opportunity to be there for her team.

“They do their job and I do mine and that’s what I love,” Johnson said. “After coming off of an injury and surgery last year, it feels good to be back and being there for my team in a big way this season, I couldn’t do what I do without them.”

With the loss, ACU slips to 2-2 while Tech improves to a perfect 4-0.

The Wildcats have a week to rest up before its next non-conference match at Elmer Gray Stadium Sunday against New Mexico State. Gametime is scheduled for 1 p.m.
