Volleyball snaps losing streak in Tulsa

September 11, 2018 by Lexi Kirgan

This weekend volleyball went to Oklahoma competed at the Tulsa Invitational ending the tournament with both a win and a loss.

On Friday the Wildcats took on Tulsa University in a match that took five sets. ACU won the first set 26-24 and the third 25-21. They tried to hang on in the fifth set, but fell short 15-13 to lose the match.

The following day, the Wildcats competed against Oral Roberts and had to go to five sets again.

The team had a slow start to the match losing the first set 25-18, but the Wildcats amped up their play winning the second set 25-19, the third 25-18 and the fifth 15-10.

Lily Drever, senior libero and defensive specialist, had an outstanding weekend for the Wildcats being named to the all-tournament team.

Drever said she and her teammates were thrilled to get the win and snap their losing streak.

“Getting the win against Oral Roberts felt really good,” Drever said. “Everything we have been working on in practice has paid off. We had so much momentum and confidence that the game was fun and intense.”

Another key player for the Wildcats this weekend was sophomore middle blocker Lorin McNeal. She also earned all-tournament team honors and led the Wildcats with 17 kills and 10 blocks.

McNeil said she feels as though the team got better from the last tournament.

“I feel like we improved on working on our shots and being aggressive to each ball.” McNeil said.

The Wildcats go to Dallas next this weekend to compete in the SMU Doubletree Classic. They will play SMU, Louisiana State and Liberty.

ACU’s first game against SMU will start at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
