Support group makes veterans feel more support on campus

October 25, 2018 by Breven Campbell

An on-campus support group for veterans will now meet on Fridays.

David Sirchia, former Marine and sophomore from Fort Worth, started the group. Sirchia said they already have events planned for the semester. The group will host ‘Toys for Tots’, an event in which donations of toys are gathered and distributed to children.

Sirchia said he hopes to host the event in the campus center.

Currently, there are 12 members in the group. Sirchia said they hope that the word can spread so that more veterans will join and make the group feel even more supported by one another.

“It’s really hard to do because the difference between us and regular students is that most of us have families and kids, so our time is a little more limited,” Sirchia said. “Right now we have 12, but I am aware that there are more veterans on this campus. It would be amazing if they could be involved.”

Sirchia said if he did not start this support group, he would not have known how to find other veterans on campus. He said he wishes there would be more support from ACU to veterans on campus.

“If we receive support from the ACU community then more veterans will come to ACU and feel comfortable on this campus,” said Sirchia.

Sirchia said the group plans to welcome in more veterans, whether students or faculty.

“I just hope this comes out to a light and puts us in more of a positive reflection of the school,” said Sirchia.
