Williamson and Wright lead Wildcats to 3-0 start

November 17, 2018 by Owen Simpson

The Wildcats clinched their third consecutive win to start the season against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds 78-46 Saturday evening.

ACU started the game on a 21-4 run putting the Greyhounds in a hole where they ultimately remained the rest of the game. In the first quarter, ACU shot 62% from the court and out rebounded Eastern New Mexico 14-3

The tides turned, however, in the second quarter when the Wildcats went five and a half minutes without scoring a single point. Both teams shot poorly in the quarter with the Greyhounds shooting 39 percent and the Wildcats 33 percent. Ultimately, Eastern won the quarter 17-13.

Junior guard Breanna Wright led the way for the Wildcats. In the first half alone, she scored 14 points on 4-7 shooting and three three-pointers.

Senior guard Sara Williamson was also a factor in the game, both on offense and defense. She finished the game with 15 points off of 7-11 shooting. Ten of those points came during the third quarter where ACU outscored Eastern New Mexico by a margin of 23-12.

One of the key factors in the game was the rebound gap between both teams where the Wildcats out rebounded the Greyhounds 54-29. A large contributor to those numbers was Senior Forward Lexi Ducat who finished with 13 rebounds in just 25 minutes of play.

Following the game, ACU head coach Julie Goodenough said her team will continue to push past its limit.

“These past three games really have shown who we are as a whole team and what we need to keep working on to improve.” Goodenough said.

She went on later to say that in the first half the team had far too many turnovers, but was much more efficient as the game progressed.

Coming up next, Eastern New Mexico will travel to Canyon next Friday as they face CSU-Pueblo in the West Texas A&M Thanksgiving Classic.

Meanwhile, ACU will put its 3-0 record on the line and travel to play New Mexico State Tuesday.
