Sam Houston takes down Wildcats in Moody

February 9, 2019 by Owen Simpson

The Wildcats capped of the week against the Sam Houston State Bearkats in Moody. ACU finished the game with 21 turnovers ultimately losing with a final score of 72-63.

This loss marks their second in a row with a current record of 14-8.

Junior guard Breanna Wright led the Wildcats for the second consecutive game as she finished with 23 points on 8-15 shooting and eight assists.

ACU jumped out to an early 10-4 lead halfway through the first quarter, but the Bearkats answered back quickly. During the first half, both teams kept it within six points shooting a less than efficient 38 percent. At the half, Wright already had 12 points, but Sam Houston led 29-26 as the Wildcats turned the ball over seven times in the second quarter alone.

The Bearkats started to show separation in the third quarter. In the second half, the Bearcats went to the free throw line 21 times which was key to their victory. Junior guard Jaylonn Walker led the way for the Bearkats finishing with 15 points and eight of those coming from the free throw line.

Entering the fourth quarter, ACU only trailed 52-45, but they could never get back in the game. The Wildcats finished 0-2 this week, losing to Lamar earlier on Wednesday.

With this loss, ACU drops to 7-4 in the conference and tied for fourth place with the Bearkats. The top-four seeds will receive a bye in the Southland Conference tournament in March.

Coming up next, ACU will be playing at Hardin Simmons as they host Nicholls Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Bearkats travel back home as they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
