The literary magazine on campus is accepting submissions through Friday.
Dr. Steven Moore, co-sponsor of the Shinnery Review with Dr. Jeremy Elliot, said the combination of short stories, non-fiction writing, photography and artwork from students in a variety of majors interested him.
“I see the Shinnery as an explosion of beautiful and amazing and extraordinary things that are going on,” Moore said. “Students are artistically expressing themselves in different venues of doing that. It’s an honor to be a sponsor because I get to see students get excited about their art.”
Moore has a background in American literature, including African American and cultural literature. As a student at the University of Wisconsin, he was editor of the student newspaper and on staff for the literary magazine. As he got interested in poetry, he starting writing it and getting published.
Since being on campus, Moore has sponsored the Shinnery Review on and off for about 20 years. The magazine has been around for over three decades.
“I love how we do our best job to represent the entire campus and student body. We want diversity to truly reign with the Shinnery. I’m so proud of our award-winning magazine for doing that.”
Because of the number of submissions, Moore said they do have to be very selective in terms of who gets into the magazine.
The selection process includes the editor, Jake Buller, assistant editor and other staff members. The sponsors have no say, but give them advice as they pick which ones make it into the final magazine.
Submissions are open to any student on campus.
“There are students who are featured who compete in national competitions and win, ACU should be proud of that,” Moore said. “We should talk more about that.”
