It was all over from the beginning as the ACU Wildcats defeated Incarnate Word 102-53 Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.
Senior day for ACU got off to a quick scoring start in the first quarter. The Wildcats shot 80 percent (12-15) from the field putting up the second most points in a segment on the season at 31.
Junior guard Breanna Wright was largely the culprit behind an offensive afternoon as she totaled 17 points alone in the first quarter. She didn’t miss a shot going 6-6 and four of those behind the three-point line. Wright finished the day 8-9 with 23 points. She nailed six threes and contributed elsewhere with seven assists.
Wright was more than happy to emphasize after the game about the team’s mentality and focus going into the matchup.”We wanted to go into this game with a lot of momentum for the tournament. We didn’t play how we wanted to against SFA and wanted to get back to ACU ball, and I think we did just that. We’ll continue to focus and lock down on defense. We’re a high scoring team and are reading the defense better and better each week, but we know that defense wins games so we just need to amp up ours.”
Senior guard Sara Williamson played her final game in Moody and left everything on the court. She brought in a double-double with 12 points and assists shooting 6-11 from the court. The lone senior for the Wildcats averaged 12 points in her final season. She also finished second overall in the conference in assists and first in field goal percentage.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures against the Cardinals Saturday marking their 20th win of the season. ACU shot 58 percent on the day, their second best of the year. They also drained a season high 16 three pointers to cap off a big win as ACU heads to the postseason.
The ACU Wildcats finish an impressive season at 20-9 to grab the number four seed in the Southland conference and a first-round bye. Wright and the Wildcats will play the winner of Sam Houston State and Central Arkansas Friday at 11 a.m. With a win, ACU would just be two more wins away from a Southland conference championship and their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament.
