The Wildcats opened their new season with a win at the ACU invitational tournament versus the UT-Arlington Mavericks, 3-1.
The first set would consist of a back-and-forth battle between the Mavericks and the Wildcats. After finding themselves down 20-23, the Wildcats would go on a 5-0 run to win the first set 25-23.
In the first set, the Wildcats had a .293 hitting percentage compared to the Mavericks .152 hit percentage. Along with this, the Wildcats had 16 kills compared to that of the Mavericks 13.
The second set was once again a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. The Wildcats were able to pull ahead by having several scoring runs, including while leading 18-16, going on a 14-0 run, then went on to win the set, 25-21.
Within this set, the Wildcats once again held a higher hitting percentage than the Mavericks.
The third set would be the only time the Wildcats would suffer a loss on Friday. This set was another very close trading of points between the two teams.
Finding themselves down by one to the Wildcats, UTA was able to go on a 3-0 run to win the set 30-28. This set would find the Wildcats with their lowest hitting percentage of the day at .235%.
The fourth and final set would be a show of dominance by the Wildcats, who at one time found themselves with a 10-point lead. However, after trading scoring runs, ACU was able to win the set and match.
A standout performance from this game would come from redshirt junior setter Madison Rohre from Woodway. Rohre had a team and game leading 59 individual assists, which was more than the 49 assists put together by the entirety of the UTA team.
Overall, the most impressive performance of the day came from senior outside and right-side hitter from New Braunfels Lindsey Toney. She led the team in five total categories, including a total of 33 kills among the four sets played.
The Wildcats will wrap up the ACU invitational Saturday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. versus the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals.
