The Wildcats (18-6, 7-2) won their sixth series of the year on Sunday taking down Sacramento State (12-11, 2-4) continuing their best start since the 2010 season.
ACU dropped the first game of the series on Friday night and bounced back to get the wins in the afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats, who were coming off a 7-0 loss against TCU last Tuesday were looking to get back on track, facing their third conference opponent of the season.
In game one, SSU would get on the board in the second with a three-run home run. Only two batters later, the Hornets would hit another blast to go up 4-0. They would tally on one more in the third on a sac fly and take a 5-0 lead into the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, it seemed that the Wildcats would finally start to find their footing. It would start with a full-count solo home run from junior outfielder Eric Martin, his second of the season. After back-to-back walks, junior outfielder Miller Ladusau would launch a homer of his own to cut into the lead even more.
Unfortunately for ACU, this would be the last time the Wildcats saw the scoreboard this game as the bullpen would take over for Sac State allowing only one more hit all night.
Yet the Wildcats held steady and it wouldn’t be up until the top of the ninth when junior left-hander Max Huffling would come into the game and allow three more runs, solidifying the opening win for the Hornets.
Game two however would be a different story.
With senior right-hander Breck Eichelberger on the mound for the Wildcats, everything seemed to go ACU’s way on Saturday.
After a leadoff triple from junior infielder Garrett Williams, Ladusau would knock in an RBI single to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
In the third, Ladusau would grab his second hit of the day, doubling to left and setting up senior outfielder Grayson Tatrow to bomb a two-run home run into right center, putting ACU up 3-0.
Eichelberger would shine all afternoon as he would throw for seven shutout innings allowing only three hits along the way.
In the bottom of the sixth, junior infielder Crewe Parke would bring in another run on an RBI single. Then with two on and two out, junior infielder Bash Randle would send one into left field for a three-run home run and his first dinger of the season.
Going into the seventh up 7-0 ACU would not take their foot off the pedal. The team leader in RBIs this season, Tatrow, would bring in one more on a double to right center. Then after a pair of walks and a stolen base, Randle would deliver again driving in the last two runs the Wildcats needed to take a 10-0 lead and force a run rule and even the series.
And if you thought the Wildcats couldn’t play much better the next day, you’d be wrong.
Similar to game two, game three would start out with Williams knocking in a hit and Ladusau bringing him in to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
Unlike Saturday, the Hornets had a better feel for the bats as Sac State would bring in three runs in the second and one more in the third to take a 4-1 lead off of junior right-hander Austin Glaze.
However, it’s safe to say that the Wildcats would respond.
In the bottom of the third, Williams and Ladusau would bring in back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game up at three. Then two batters later, the RBI king himself, Grayson Tatrow, would launch a grand slam into right field and ACU would take a 7-4 lead. The Wildcats weren’t done either and after two more RBI singles, Williams would be back up to bat for the second time in the inning and hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 11-4 through three.
In the fourth, Randle would single in another run, but the Hornets would grab that run right back in the fifth off of a sac fly.
The day would not be over for ACU though as they would go on to score eight more runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings before taking a 20-5 run-rule victory and winning their third conference series of the season.
ACU continues to add to their historic start, this being the best conference start since 2010.
The Wildcats will head to Waco on Tuesday to face the Baylor Bears with a first pitch time set for 6:30 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
Quotes will be added following Rick McCarty’s next Monday press conference.
