Soccer shuts out Prairie View A&M

September 18, 2023 by Sammantha Gutierrez

The Wildcats (5-3-1) shut out Prairie View A&M (0-6) Thursday night 6-0 with junior forward Chayse Thorn and sophmore forward Amelia Leggett scoring two apiece, and sophmore mid-fielder Taylor Denn and sophmore forward Peyton Hill each scoring one.

Eight minutes into the first half, Thorn got the Wildcats on the board with an unassisted goal to take the lead 1-0.

“This is our fifth win; sixth shut out. A lot of discipline and good work going into conference play,” said head coach Stephen Salas.

In the 57th minute, Hill made the assist to Thorn for her fourth multi-goal game of the season, expanding the lead to 2-0.

Sophmore forward Lox Neves quickly joined the party and assisted Legget in the 76th minute.

The Cats found a rhythm that worked well in less than ten minutes, as Hill scored her second goal of the season in the 85th minute with an assist from Thorn. Within 21 seconds, Legget extended the lead to 5-0 with an assist from Denn.

Denn scored the final goal for the Wildcats 31 seconds after that.

“Working together as a team, finding simple combinations and knowing what worked– being problem solvers is what they did,” Salas said.

ACU had 26 shots and 12 of those were on goal. Thorn led the team with seven shots and five shots on goal. Den and Leggett had two shots on goal and one a piece from junior mid-fielder Hannah Martin, junior defender Macie Stephens and Hill.

Working together, goalkeepers Julia Herges and Savanna Alba got the shutout for ACU.

ACU’s next home game will be 5 p.m. on October 1 against Tarleton State University at Elmer Gray Stadium.
