Soccer drops back-to-back road games as Wildcats extend losing streak

October 15, 2023 by Will Dalton

ACU Soccer (7-8-1, 2-5-0) dropped both road matchups this week as the Wildcats have now lost four straight games.

The Wildcats took on Southern Utah (3-8-5, 3-3-1) and came up short by one goal, losing in a final of 3-2.

The Thunderbirds got on the board early scoring their first goal in the 14th minute of play. However, the Wildcat leader in goals this season, junior forward Chayse Thorn, evened up the score in the 18th minute, scoring her 13th goal of the season.

Later into the game, in the 58th minute, Southern Utah would retake the lead and go up 2-1. A little over three minutes later, sophomore defender Georgia Guenther assisted senior forward Jordan Michie for her second goal of the season and once again the game was tied.

Late into the game, in the 85th minute SUU’s Ashley Rivera would score the go-ahead goal which would end up being the game winner as the Wildcats would fall in a close one.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lili Ross had led with seven saves for the Wildcats and Thorn and Michie led with four total shots on goal.

On Sunday, the Wildcats dropped another game, falling to Utah Tech (8-4-5, 3-0-4) in a final of 3-1.

The Wildcats would go up early after a goal from sophomore middle-fielder Taylor Denn, her fourth of the season. The Wildcats would not be able to hold on however, as the Trailblazers would go on to score three goals throughout the game and grab the win.

Taylor would have one more shot on goal and sophomore forward Peyton Hill would account for five total shots throughout the game, along with three saves from Ross.

The Wildcats are back home this week for their last two regular season matchups of the season, when they take on Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. on Thursday and California Baptist at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The regular season concludes on Sunday as the Wildcats will then prepare for the WAC Tournament, which begins on Oct. 29.

The United Athletic Conference is officially taking the place of the Western Athletic Conference in the 2026-2027 athletic year. The UAC is a joint football effort between the WAC and the ASUN but will now extend to all sports. #acuoptimist #acuathletics #wac #uac

My second year at ACU was full of opportunities that grew me as an individual and a journalist.

In my first year as editor in chief of @acuoptimist, we published six print issues, filmed a 3-hour live election show, and revamped our newscast, all while producing news weekly.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
