Soccer looks to ‘score first’ on road trip

October 15, 2025 by Hayden DeLand Leave a Comment

After playing their last three games in Texas, the Wildcats will travel to Utah for their final two road games of the season to face Southern Utah University on Thursday and Utah Tech University on Sunday.

ACU has played both opponents previously this season at home, tying Utah Tech 1-1 and defeating Southern Utah 4-0.

“We’ve played both of these teams before, but we know both of these teams are going to change up something,” Head Coach Stephen Salas said. “So for us, it’s staying focused on who we are in our mission.”

In the team’s most recent match against Tarleton State University on Friday, the Wildcats took an early lead with a goal in the 19th minute. No more goals were scored until the 81st minute, when Tarleton tied the score. ACU took the lead back two minutes later but held it for only two minutes before Tarleton scored another goal to tie the game at 2-2.

Salas said the team’s ability to score first as well as to score multiple goals was big for them as a team.

The Wildcats have scored multiple goals only twice in games this season, in their most recent games – two against Tarleton and four against Southern Utah.

An area of struggle for the Wildcats this season has been playing on the road, posting a 1-7-1 record.

In nine road games this season, ACU has scored first only one other time, against UTEP in the first game of the season.  By comparison, the team, when at home, has scored first in four out of five matches.

“We know we need to start stronger on the road, and we know that we’re doing that and we’re staying prepared,” Salas said. “A big part of it is just our pregame focus and getting everyone on the same page.”

The Wildcats sit fourth out of six spots in the Western Athletic Conference standings behind Utah Valley, California Baptist and Utah Tech. With wins this week, ACU could jump up to the third spot.

After the Wildcats return from their road trip, they will finish the regular season with three home games against Tarleton, UVU and CBU.
