The Wildcats, who are currently on a two-game winning streak, are looking to close out their season strong before the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In their game against Utah Tech last Thursday, the team took a commanding lead, going on a 14-0 run to start the game.
They were led by Erin Woodson, junior guard from Richmond, Virginia, who played all 40 minutes of the game. Along with scoring 23 points, Woodson pulled down a season high of 14 rebounds.
To continue the homestand, the Wildcats took on Utah Valley on Saturday. After a slow start offensively, the Wildcats were able to chip away at the Wolverines’ lead in the second half.
The Wildcats produced 17 points from the bench. In a press conference on Monday, Head Coach Julie Goodenough said she was really impressed with Aimee Flippen, sophomore center from Glen Rose, and Jazmyn Stone, junior guard from Federal Way, Washington, who both stepped up when the team needed them.
“We have not had better bench point production the entire season as we did on Saturday,” Goodenough said. “We needed every point that came off the bench.”
The Wildcats took the win after a nail-biting fourth quarter that saw four lead changes in the final minute. Breanna Davis, senior guard from Waxahachie, scored the game-winning layup. With eight points on the day, Davis shot perfectly from the field, making two of her three shots in that final minute of play.
The team’s senior night will be on Thursday, and it will be the last time one of the Wildcats plays in Moody Coliseum.
Breanna Davis is in their second and final season at ACU. As Davis was starting her collegiate career, Goodenough said she and the rest of the staff knew they wanted her on the team. After starting her career at UNT, Davis hit the transfer portal, reopening the door for her to come to ACU.
Heading into this week, Davis has scored 352 points in her two seasons as a Wildcat. With 143 assists and 102 rebounds, Davis has been a key to this team’s offense.
“The one regret I have for Bre being here is she only played for us for two seasons,” Goodenough said. “We would have loved to have had her for four.”
On top of this being their last home game of the season, the Wildcats have a crucial game on their hands. The team is gearing up to take on California Baptist, currently the number one team in the WAC.
With a win, the Wildcats would take over the WAC standings with only one game remaining in the regular season. As the second seed, they would already receive a bye to the semifinals of the postseason tournament. With Southern Utah only one game behind, a win would further solidify that bye.
Even though the tournament is right around the corner, taking place March 11-14, Goodenough said that she and the rest of the team haven’t really been talking about it. Their focus heading into this week is looking at the next game and doing everything they can in the moment.
“Our players did a really good job at just taking one day at a time, one game at a time,” Goodenough said. “We talk a lot about winning the day, whether it’s practice or it’s a game day.”
The Wildcats will tip off against the Lancers on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN+.
