After causing an uproar in Moody with a buzzer-beater win in its last game against Incarnate Word, the women’s basketball team will once again hit the road for two games.
Head Coach Julie Goodenough said the team has to remain focused on the road
“You gotta show some toughness, the wear and tear of the season is upon every team right now,” Goodenough said. “You can’t feel sorry for yourself and feel like your life is harder than everybody else’s. We just gotta be the team that wants to win more.”
The Wildcats will start with heading east to face Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond Saturday, a team the women beat 86-80 in Abilene earlier this season.
The star sophomore duo of point guard Breana Wright and guard Dominique Golightly, along with junior guard Sara Williamson, dominated the prior victory against the Lions. Williamson and Wright both posted 20 points each in the game, while Golightly earned a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Sierra Allen also captured a double-double knocking down 13 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
Southeastern Louisiana kept pace with ACU for almost the entire game, but at the 6:49 mark of the fourth quarter with the score tied at 66, the women jumped on a 13-2 run up to the 2:01 mark. The Lions then closed the game with a 12-7 run, however, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wildcats mid-quarter surge.
Coming into the game, the Wildcats rank fourth in the Southland at 15-8 overall and 9-4 in conference. The Lions sit under the middle of the pack at ninth with a 6-18 overall record and a 5-8 record in Southland play.
With this away game coming up, ACU will have played six of its last eight matches on the road. Williamson, who hit the winning buzzer-beater against Incarnate Word last Saturday, said the team knows how to handle constant road trips well.
“We know it’s part of the job, it’s what we signed up for,” Williamson said. “We got study hall even on the road, so we’re taking our academics very seriously, but we’re also taking basketball seriously too.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, which will lead into the men’s game scheduled for 5 p.m.
