Art and Design Department hosts “Postcards From Abroad”

October 29, 2018 by Jamon Nelson

The art and design department will feature an art exhibit with artwork from Study Abroad in a showcase called “Postcards from Abroad”.

The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. inside the Shore Gallery. The exhibit be a gathering of work from students who attended the Study Abroad trip over the summer.

“Postcards From Abroad” is a bi-annual event. The students are away for seven weeks and create various works including water color, en plein air and photography.

The students spent three weeks in Oxford, England, a week in Rome and another three weeks in Florence, Italy. During their trip students take photography, painting and art history classes.

“This show is a display of the photography that the students took and the paintings that they painted on-site,” said Mike Wiggins, art and design department chairman.

“We always have a really good response,” said Arlene Kasselman, art and design administrative coordinator. “Other students who have studied abroad for long term semesters and short trips usually like to come because they can understand the pieces that have been painted.”

Kasselman said students achieve a better understanding of artwork from certain locations once they have witnessed it in person. Upon return, the students and faculty select the pieces to be displayed in the art show.

Of the 20 students who took part in Study Abroad, each are required to provide two pieces of work. The 40 pieces will be featured in the show.

“It’s a visual way of telling what they have learned,” said Wiggins.

Wiggins said 150-200 people generally attend the opening, with an additional 200-300 observers for the remainder of the show. The exhibit will be open for two weeks.
