SRWC to offer Country Dance Lessons to Students

March 23, 2019 by Brian Sweet

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center is offering country dance lessons on March 25 from 7-9 p.m. in studio B.

The first hour of lessons will focus on line dancing, and the second hour will focus on partner dancing. The cost to attend the dance lessons is five dollars.

Two of the teachers are Anne Crane, assistant coordinator for Worldwide Witnesses, and Deanna Tuttle, Missions Coordinator for the Halbert Center for Missions and Global Service.

Crane has previous experience in country dancing.

“I actually started about nine years ago in California and continued when I was living in South Carolina through just friends who did line dancing,” Crane said.

Tuttle is also an experienced country line dancer.

“I had been introduced to line dancing in Florida with some family. The first time that I did two-stepping or partner country dancing was in Abilene when I came here as a freshman,” Tuttle said.

Crane said she brought the idea of country dancing lessons up when she realized no one actually knew how to line dance.

“When I moved to Texas two and a half years ago, I was really surprised that no one did line dancing and I really wanted to bring it more to Abilene,” Crane said.

With little interest shown a year ago, they are trying to bring the activity back.

“We tried this about a year ago on campus and it just didn’t take off so we are trying it again,” Crane said.

Crane said when she was picking out dances to teach, she chose ones more local to the Texas region.

“Those are ones we feel like that they are most likely going to hear soon again so they can keep up with what they’ve learned,” Crane said.  “A lot of dances I know are more particular to the region that I’ve learned them in, so we were trying to find some that would be more frequent here.”

Tuttle said they don’t have huge expectations for attendance.

“We’ve taught really small classes before, so whoever wants to come, we are happy that they will join us,” Tuttle said.

To sign up for country dance lessons, students will need to register on the SRWC website under program and event registration.
