A public lecture on the book “More than Medicine” will be held by Dr. LaTonya Trotter on Friday in the Packer Forum.

The focus is to be a discussion on the book’s main themes of nurse practitioners and their ties with the healthcare workforce. Students are encouraged to attend the event regardless of their major as it would be a great learning experience for anyone interested in the medical field.

Trotter, the assistant professor of sociology at Vanderbilt University, will speak at the event about her upcoming book “More than Medicine.” She will share thoughts on the practice of sociology in medicine and how her personal experiences and career steps have shaped her viewpoints.

Dr. Dan Morrison, assistant professor of communication and sociology at ACU, is the organizer in charge of the event. Having transferred from Vanderbilt himself, Morrison is very familiar with Trotter’s work and her contributions to the field of sociology. Morrison encourages students who have any interest in the health profession to attend the event, as Trotter will be giving a closer look into what the healthcare workforce is like outside of a university.

“Certainly any student could come,” Morrison said. “Whether you want to be a doctor, or a nurse, or a PT person, or a sports medicine person, athletic trainer anybody who wants to do something in the health profession – any of those groups would be really well served by attending this event.”

According to Morrison, the event will touch base on the book and give listeners a bit more insight as to how healthcare is organized and how the roles and responsibilities are divided. Followed by the unique area that nurse practitioners have in caring for and the technical expertise that comes with the line of work.

The event will be open to the public on Friday at 3 p.m. in the Packer Forum.
