Tent shelters 24-hour prayer

September 22, 2009 by Special Contributor

By Brittany Brand

ACU students will come together in prayer in a tent outside Moody Coliseum 24 hours a day for the entire week of Summit. By Wednesday, students will have prayed for 192 hours straight.

The tent opened at midnight Saturday and will close at midnight Saturday – seven days of continuous prayer.

The students pray nonstop because “the Lord’s kingdom never rests,” said Josh Love, an ACU alumnus involved in organizing the event.

The prayer tent is an annual student-initiated and student-led event, but this is only the second time it has been a 24-hour, weeklong event. The prayer tent “highlights the significance of what is happening at Summit,” said Dr. Brady Bryce, director of ministry events. Participants may utilize the tent any time this week for prayer and praise.

Chloe Hodge, sophomore art education major from Fort Worth, visited the prayer tent last year and said she looks forward to contributing again.

“I love the idea of the opportunity to have the campus covered in prayer for an entire week,” Hodge said.

Students will pray for Summit events and speakers, among other things. Participants will focus prayers specifically on those who could not make it to Summit this year at scheduled times throughout the week, Bryce said. Students signed up for the event in the Campus Center last week, choosing one-hour time slots from a list of 192.

Even though the prayer tent is student-led, the invitation to pray is extended to everyone, Love said. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside the tent for those who want to be involved and did not have a chance to sign up last week.

"Ending my college education early was always the plan for me, but the things that I have been able to see, experience and examine about ACU’s community were not. I have found immense growth in ACU over the past three and a half years, but ACU still has a long road to climb if it wants to keep catering to students as the world changes around them."
