Stepping into the Dixie Pig is like stepping back in time to the 1950’s. A time where diners acted like today’s fast food restaurants and waitresses knew your name and your order without asking.
The historic Abilene restaurant, nicknamed by regulars as “the Pig,” opened in 1931 with significant structural renovations made in 1941 and 1948, giving the restaurant its retro vibe. The light pink walls of the Pig hold shelves of pig figurines and pictures of the pigs so you never forget where you’re eating. A bar wraps around a bustling kitchen and the loud ring of the rotary phone on the wall completes the ’50s feel.
Along with displaying one of the most aesthetically pleasing signs in town, the Pig serves one of Abilene’s best breakfasts – A breakfast worth waking up for.
College students are notorious for waking up 5 minutes before their 8:00 a.m. class, brushing their teeth and running to avoid being tardy – leaving caution – and breakfast -to the wind. Only sometimes reaching for a granola bar or pop tart to eat in class. And this is even after studies have shown the key to a good day is a better breakfast.
The Dixie Pig goes beyond the prepackaged pastry and offers a variety of biscuits, pancakes and breakfast meats. But the highlight of the Pig’s breakfast is the extensive selection of omelets.
First timers, and bacon lovers, must try the Mr. Pig omelet. Eggs encase breakfast sausage, bacon, ham and cheese into a soft but substantial omelet. The crispy bacon, juicy ham and warm fried eggs will fill the breakfast void like no granola bar can. Paired with a ceramic mug of freshly brewed coffee, this large breakfast will wake you up and keep you full for hours.
For more health conscious eaters, the Pig also offers a veggie omelet. This omelet is a little lighter than the Mr. Pig but still packs a variety of vegetables into its egg surroundings.
If you haven’t eaten breakfast at the Dixie Pig, you should sacrifice an hour of sleep to enjoy a morning at the Pig with a friend. Its antique atmosphere, retro charm and delicious breakfast won’t leave you wishing you’d slept in.
