GSP pledges defend Christian brotherhood of social club

October 9, 2002 by Optimist Reader

Dear Editor,

As the 2002 pledging class of the social club Gamma Sigma Phi, the article in Wednesday’s Optimist (Oct. 2, “Students decide against pledging”) caught our collective eye.

We wear a label going to Abilene Christian University of being a Christian. The majority, while not perfect, is striving to live a life reflected of Christ. The same is true with the social club Gamma Sigma Phi.

We wear the image of a Christian brotherhood as the title of the club song suggests, “In Christian Brotherhood.” The title is more than just a song we sing. It represents a belief upon which the social club bases its actions.

The pursuit of this brotherhood with Christian young men is a growing journey. Not everyone will display the highest standards of Christian brotherhood because we all fall short. It is in that journey that we can rely on our brothers in Christ to hold us accountable to higher standards.

We have heard stories and seen the actions of the members of Gamma Sigma Phi, and because of these actions, we saw something in Gamma Sigma Phi that made us believe that it is a Christian brotherhood. We still hold this belief while going through the pledging process.

While not perfect, as any organization wearing the name of Christ, we are striving with our brothers to establish a unified Christian brotherhood that will support and show Christ through our imperfections.

Clay Rich
Sophomore, 2002 pledging class of Gamma Sigma Phi
