Reminder to always rely on God

September 19, 2003 by Optimist Reader

“I can do all things through my own strength!”

This is what I believed because I was a healthy, physically strong and educated young man.

At the age of 30 I owned a successful computer business I had started as well as flying full time for the Air Force.

During college I was a member of the University of G A Powerlifting Team bench pressing 454 pounds and overhead pressing 275 pounds, weighing only 185 pounds.

I thought I was untouchable or invincible. However, this all changed when a 16-year-old pulled out in front of my car.

I went from seemingly invincible status to being unable to pick up a gallon of milk after the neck surgery I had to have. I don’t believe God caused my wreck to punish me for something I had done. I do think however that God uses bad things that happen to us for His good.

Over the next decade I learned to rely not on my own strength but on our Creator’s strength. I think, as human beings, this story could be changed slightly and fit any number of people. I think a lot of us tend to rely not on God but our own abilities or call only on God after our attempts to solve problems fail.

Perhaps this is true about your life, so I ask you to wake up before you are forced to as I was. Rely on God now as a first, not as a last, resort.
