Wildcats sign top high school standouts: Brown, Lowry sign with volleyball team

December 3, 2003 by Brian Roe

By Brian Roe, Sports Writer

After winning 25 games, having five players honored by the conference and coming within one spot of the NCAA Division II Southwest Region tournament in 2003, ACU head coach Brek Horn announced last Friday the volleyball team signed Abilene High standout Terah Brown and Flower Mound star Abbie Lowry to binding letters of intent.

“We were looking at a handful of players and we had two in mind that we were sure would be here next year,” said Horn, the Lone Star Conference South Division coach of the year.

ACU will return all but one player next season (Haylee Hartline), including five of six starters and should be one of the favorites to win the Lone Star Conference championship in 2004.

“I expect success again next year except this time around us playing in the regional tournament,” Horn said.

Brown helped lead the Lady Eagles of Abilene High to a combined record of 49-15 over the last two seasons as they reached the post-season in each of those seasons. She was first team all-District 3-5A and the district’s Defensive MVP in each of her last two seasons.

Last season, Brown recorded 99 kills, 50 blocks and a .318 hitting percentage in District 3-5A matches.

Lowry led Flower Mound to a 22-11 record last season and was named first team all-District 7-5A for the second consecutive season. She was also District 6-5A Newcomer of the Year in 2001 as a sophomore.

Last season, Lowry posted 377 kills, 322 digs, 38 blocks and 11 service aces from the outside hitter and middle blocker positions.

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
