Cats make it five straight; four games remain

February 18, 2004 by Brian Roe

By Brian Roe, Sports Writer

Senior center Melanie Carter scored a season-high 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds leading ACU to a 87-65 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Conference South Division game Saturday.

Sophomore guard Ashley King added 16 points, and senior center Lynsie Blau produced 14 points and nine rebounds for ACU.

The loss pushes Kingsville to 2-21, 1-9 on the season while the Wildcats improved to 16-7, 8-2 in 2004.

The Wildcats, riding a five-game winning streak, remain in a three-way tie for first place in the LSC South Division with Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M, both of whom also won Saturday.

Only four more regular season games remain in 2004 with the Wildcats hitting the road to battle Texas Woman’s on Thursday and Midwestern on Saturday.

The Wildcats host the two teams currently tied with them for first place in the LSC South, playing West Texas A&M on Feb. 26 and Eastern New Mexico Feb. 28.

Head coach Shawna Lavender said the team looks to take each game for what it’s worth

“We’ve put ourselves in good position, and now we just need to go out and take care of business,” Lavender said. “We really are just taking it one game at a time.”

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
