ASU sweeps Cats to end season: ACU finishes season 20-30, 7-13

April 28, 2004 by Brian Roe

By Brian Roe, Sports Writer

Nationally ranked Angelo State swept the ACU Wildcats in a four-game series over the weekend to win the Lone Star Conference South Division.

The Wildcats had a shot at reaching the LSC playoffs by taking three of four games from Angelo State.

The No. 5-ranked Rambelles, however, knocked off the young Wildcats by scores of 4-2, 8-0, 11-7 and 5-0 at ASU Field on Friday and Saturday.

ACU completes its season with a combined record of 20-30 and a 7-13 record in the LSC South.

Although the team did not make the postseason in 2004, many bright spots give hope for the future.

Freshman pitcher Allison Crouse had a great rookie season, posting a 7-8 record, a 4.11 earned run average and allowing only 19 walks in 118 innings.

Junior infielder Valerie Malkinson had a strong offensive season, leading the team with a .403 batting average, with six home runs and 47 RBI.

The best news for the Wildcat softball team is that infielder Katie Bryan has one more season left. Bryan belted an ACU single-season record 12 home runs and 51 RBI this season. She also holds the all-time ACU record for career homeruns (19) and career RBI (113).
