JV team stomps McMurry, 22-7: Cats use balanced attack, down McMurry

The junior varsity football team moved to 2-2 on the season after a 22-7 victory over McMurry on Thursday.

The Wildcats had their best offensive output of the year with 313 total yards and held the Indians to 177 total yards-80 of which came on their opening touchdown drive.

“We gave up a touchdown on the opening drive, then completely shut them down,” JV coach Colby Carthel said.

Freshman quarterback Brock Pierce championed the ACU offense, completing 14 of 20 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshman running back Brandon Martin helped the Cats out with 13 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown run.

“He had his best game of the year behind solid blocking in the offensive line,” Carthel said.

Junior tight end/linebacker Todd Mrozek “made plays all night,” Carthel said of the Plano native, who played on both sides of the ball for the Wildcats. Mrozek caught a 28-yard touchdown reception on offense and recorded nine tackles on defense.

Freshman linebacker Marion Harris contributed to the defensive effort with four tackles and an interception.

Carthel said ACU’s secondary of freshmen Quincy Green, Cedric Thomas, Robert Grannis, Kevin Wesley, Cortney Armstrong, Craig Lyons and Barret Boone “played really well. They shut down McMurry’s pass-oriented defense,” he said.

For the second week in a row, the Wildcats play at McMurry Thursday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
