Big Country Art Association to feature students in show

November 14, 2012 by John Martin

ACU students entered the Big Country Art Association’s annual art competition last Thursday. Several student works that were selected will be seen throughout the competition, which ends on Nov. 29.

BCAA is an organization composed of regional artists, and organizes an annual art competition. The ACU Downtown Gallery is hosting the competition as it has for the past several years. Entries were submitted and judged on Nov. 3. Awards were selected and winning entries were moved on to the art show which opened on Nov. 8.

Jack Maxwell, professor of art and design, believes the competition is a great opportunity to see local artists at work.

“It’s the kind of show that should have great appeal for visitors as there are many representations of different types of media and forms of expression,” Maxwell said. “I hope many from the ACU community will come enjoy the work and support these artists.”

Over 100 entries were submitted. Of those entries, approximately 60 were chosen to advance to the main show. Some of the ACU students selected to have their art featured include Emily Teel, Isabel Lee, Julie Brannan, Bethany Peterson, Stephanie Fink, Jessica Broderick, Traci Crawford, Jennifer Crawford and others.

Isabell Lee, sophomore art major from Abilene, will be attending the competition for the second time.

“I was so excited when I found out my work was accepted to the competition,” Lee said. “I was a little nervous dropping off my artwork for the competition after seeing that many professional artists and professors had also submitted their work. I hope to take away more experience and knowledge of what it takes to get into judged art shows.”

The ACU Downtown Gallery will be open from noon – 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday until the competition ends on Nov. 29.

Several ACU students were removed from the seating behind the Utah Valley bench late in the fourth quarter while arguing with UVU fans. After a conversation with ACUPD and other staff members, they were relocated to the stands near the UVU bench on the south baseline.

An altercation occurred between Associate Head Coach Yannick Denson and UVU Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Josh Morzelewski ahead of the 1 p.m. tip. The playing surface was mopped less than an hour before tip, while the Wolverines were completing their pregame warmups.
