Hal Mumme resigns as McMurry’s head football coach

January 30, 2013 by Edward Isaacs

Head football coach Hal Mumme announced on Friday that he would be stepping down after four seasons at McMurry University.

Mumme has been a college head coach for 22 years and his résumé includes stints at Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools: the University of Kentucky and New Mexico State University.

Mason Miller, who has been an offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, was named to replace Mumme as the head coach.

Mumme began his tenure at McMurry on April 15, 2009. He was the 20th head coach in the War Hawks football program and arrived at a time when the team had lost 13 consecutive games and not had a winning season since 2000. Mumme turned around the program and helped them achieve a 27-16 record in four years, including three consecutive winning seasons.

McMurry earned its first NCAA Division III playoff berth in 2011. The team beat Trinity University in the first round of the playoffs. After that season, Mumme was announced as the 2011 South Region Coach of the Year.

Coach Mumme pushed for a multimillion-dollar renovation of Wilford Moore Stadium and also backed the school in its move up to Division II. The War Hawks played as a D-II independent last fall and went 8-3 in defeating Southern Arkansas, 36-35 in the CHAMPS Heart of Texas Bowl, which was Mumme’s final game.

Mumme is known as the creator of the Air Raid offense. This style of play became popular in the late 1990s when Mumme was the head coach at Kentucky. The spread, no-huddle offense really took flight when Mike Leach adopted it at Texas Tech for over 10 years.
