Wildcats’ Reyare Thomas sprints past record

February 10, 2013 by Jimmy Isbell

Reyare Thomas made Wildcat history last weekend at the 2013 Armory Collegiate Invitational, and didn’t even know it.

Thomas, a 2012 London Olympian native from Trinidad Tobago, recorded a 23.98 200-meter dash, which places her over former Wildcat record holder Kim Prather. Prather’s previous record was 24.26 in 2009.

“I didn’t even know I broke the record until I got back to Abilene,” Thomas said. “Darian Hogg (long jump) had told me the day after we got back from New York that I had broken the record.”

Thomas ranks fourth among all NCAA D-II sprinters this season behind Latoya King of Lincoln, Vashti Thomas of Academy of Art and Danielle Williams of Johnson C. Smith.

Thomas joins her fellow teammates Elia Diarra (400m) and Amanda Ouedraogo (triple jump) at the 2013 NCAA D-II National Championships.

“I think it was shocking to me, because I know ACU has had some good athletes in the past few years, most of them Olympians as well,” Thomas said.

Head coach Roosevelt Lofton and assistant track and field coach Jerrod Cook look to have many more qualify in the meets to come.

“This past meet is a very large meet, so it’s hit or miss,” Lofton said. “You’re going to have kids that will go up there and run well, and you’re going to have kids that will go up there and fizzle. I feel like it’s because of the competition and where it is located.”

The team split up traveling to Texas Tech for the Red Raider Open and the 2013 Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York, New York. Many of the throwers and multi-athletes traveled with Coach Cook to Lubbock, while the sprinters and jumpers traveled to the Big Apple.

Among the highlights of sprinters, senior Baptiste Kerjean recorded his personal best in the weight throw with an incredible distance of 18.45 meters, but came up short when Texas State’s Darian Brown threw just a quarter inch more at 18.46 meters.

The Wildcats travel to Lubbock for the Lone Star Conference Championships on Feb. 23-24.
